8 Ways to Protect Your Hair Care This Winter
Weather reports indicate that “Bomb Cyclone” winter storm is anticpated to hit parts of the country this weekend and is proof that winter is still here and in full force!
Although the weather outside may be frightful, your hair care during these frigid temperatures doesn’t have to be. Here are our top tips to protect your hair care this winter:
1. Say Hello to Hat Hair
One way to protect your hair from moisture-robbing snow, rain, wind, and dry air is to shield it with a stylish hat.
Avoid hats lined with wool, cotton, and other fabrics that can cause breakage and opt for a hat lined in satin or silk to prevent damage. Help provide extra moisture by using an ultra-hydrating leave-in conditioner on your hair before heading out to brave the elements.
2. Use a Humidifier
Another great way to fight dry winter hair is by using a humidifier. Since indoor heaters can cause the air inside to become very dry and, thus, dry out your hair. A humidifier can help keep hair hydrated when indoors.
3. Lower the Water Temperature When Showering
We know that the temptation to hop into a steamy hot shower when it’s freezing outside is tempting but doing so can zap moisture from your locks, making them brittle and more susceptible to breakage. Instead, we recommend washing your hair with a moisturizing shampoo and hydrating conditioner in lukewarm water and finish by rinsing with cool water.
4. Get Trims Regularly
A great way to maintain healthy hair and keep your locks looking fresh is getting a trim every 4-8 weeks. Just taking a bit off the bottom can reduce split ends.
5. Avoid Heat Styling
During the winter months, it’s best to allow your hair to air dry as heat styling with a blow dryer will draw the moisture out of your hair and increase the chances of hair breakage. Air drying helps keep your hair shiny and healthy. We recommend spritzing your hair with a moisturizing leave-in conditioner after showering in the evening and letting your tresses dry naturally overnight.
6. Don’t Leave the House with Your Hair Wet
While air drying is best, it’s better to go outside after blow drying your hair than go out with it wet. That’s because wet hair is more vulnerable to damage and can freeze and, possibly, break.
7. Deep Condition at Least Once a Week
Keeping hair hydrated is super important for winter hair care. This is why we recommend using a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week to replenish moisture and combat the effects of indoor heating, winter winds, and hot styling tools. We recommend applying it, combing it through your hair, and letting it sit for a minimum of 15 minutes.
8. Avoid Washing Your Hair Too Often
If you’re used to washing your hair every day, we recommend changing your routine. Over-washing hair strips it of its natural protective oils which are much needed in the dry winter months. Instead, try switching your wash routine to every other day or, if your hair is still dry, every two days. Another way to extend wash times is to use a dry shampoo to keep hair looking and smelling fresh in between washes.
