Shower Gel vs. Body Wash & How to Use Them
Shower gel and body wash...many people use the terms interchangeably but the products are, in fact, very different. Although both are used to cleanse your body when you shower, there is one main thing that sets them apart and that is their texture.
Body wash is often thinner, like liquid soap, while shower gel, like Arganatural’s Anti-Aging Shower Gel Collection, is firmer with a gel-like consistency.
How do you use shower gel and body wash?
Besides choosing the right shower gel or body wash, the next important step is choosing the right method of application to ensure that you get the most out of this first step in your body skincare routine.
Method #1: With A Sponge
If you’re looking for great lather, using a sponge with your shower gel or bath gel will be your best bet because of how porous they are. They are also a good choice if you have sensitive skin and are looking for a gentle method of application. In general, there are two types of sponges:
Synthetic - Are typically made of plastic, tend to be softer, and come in many different shapes and sizes.
Natural - Also known as sea sponges are mostly tan or brown in color and are hypoallergenic. They also contain natural enzymes that prevent mold, mildew, and bacteria from growing.
Method #2: With a Washcloth or Bath Mitt
Another option to consider applying your shower gel or bath gel is a washcloth or bath mitt. They won’t produce as much lather as other methods but they do provide an economical way to get your body squeaky clean.
Washcloths - Almost any small, square towel can be used as a washcloth. They aren’t great for lather but are easy to clean.
Bath Mitts - Fit over your hand and are, usually, loofah on one side and cloth on the other.
Method #3: A Loofah or Pouf
We recommend using this option when applying your shower gel or bath gel when you need exfoliation, particularly before shaving.
Bath poufs - Come in all different colors and are gentler on skin. They can be made from natural plant fibers, like bamboo, or plastic. They also produce a lot of lather.
Loofahs - Are tube-shaped sponges and are made from the luffa plant. They are coarse in texture making them a great way to exfoliate dead-skin.
No matter what method you choose to apply your shower gel or bath gel, you must take special precautions to keep bacteria from growing on your sponge, loofah, etc. Here are our suggestions:
Toss your washcloth in with your laundry.
Rinse out your sponge and allow it to air dry completely before using it again.
Microwave your damp sea sponge or loofah for 20 seconds to kill bacteria. If you have a plastic sponge, don’t microwave, set it out in the sun instead.
Soak your sponge in 5% bleach diluted in water.
Replace poufs and loofahs every three weeks.
Replace sponges every six to eight weeks.
One final tip:
To ensure skin retains optimal moisture after showering, we recommend applying body moisturizer while skin is still damp to help seal in hydration.
